7 Best Sneakers For Flat Feet According to a Podiatrist

Fun Fact: We all take our very first steps with flat feet! It’s true–babies are all born with flat feet. Subsequently, some of us develop arches in our feet, some of us will not. Whether we develop arches in our feet or our feet remain flat, entirely depends on our genetics. Above all, If you have flat feet–also known as fallen arches, it’s essential to make intelligent decisions about your footwear. Keep reading for a list of sneakers for flat feet.

From my 10+ years of experience as a foot doctor, I find that particular sneakers are better than others for flat feet. This post contains my favorite sneakers for flat feet based on my experience as a foot doctor. If you have a favorite sneaker that’s not on this list–please let us know in the comments below! This sneaker list is all opinion based on my experience.

Flat Feet Myths

Unless they hurt, flat feet are not an impairment. A person with flat feet can still run a marathon, join the army, wear heels, and dance to their heart’s content. I know plenty of patients and friends who run marathons, dance in competitions, play sports, etc., with flat feet. Flat feet are only an issue if you experience pain along with them.

If you have pathological flat feet, your feet will hurt while walking, running, or you may find it difficult to walk or run. In addition, flat foot pain doesn’t necessarily have to be in your feet. The pain might be in a neighboring joint like the ankle, knee, hip, or lower back. Sixty million Americans, or 25% of the U.S. population, have flat feet.

Sneakers for Flat Feet

This article contains sneakers that I recommended to patients, friends, family members or sneakers I have personally worn etc. These reviews are honest, unsponsored, and solely based on an opinion from my experience. ASICS

ASICS is a top sneaker brand so many people SWEAR BY – myself included. Plus, this brand is recommended by plenty of podiatrists. ASICS out performs other sneakers specifically for high impact sports. I can attest to this statement. For example, when I partake in HIIT High Intensity Interval training workout classes in my ASICS, my feet are almost never sore post-workout.

The ASICS Gel Kayano sneaker incorporates something called “dynamic duomax” technology which helps stabilize flat feet during running. This sneaker is perfect for overpronators. Overpronation is a term to describe a flat foot when the toes move in the opposite direction of the legs. Also, the arch is lacking support during activity. ASICS is also known for its unique foam/gel sole combination, making its sneakers unique and SO comfortable.

G-Defy

I own a pair of Gravity Defyer sneakers (kindly gifted from Gdefy to try see images below). They are similar to Hoka’s in that they are a maximalist type of sneaker. Maximalist sneakers are suitable for foot arthritis, neuromas, and rigid flat feet.

Hoka One

Women’s Hoka One One Bondi 7 & Running Shoe (CLICK TO SHOP)
Men’s Hoka One One Bondi 7 & Running Shoe (CLICK TO SHOP)

True Story: A friend of mine struggled to find a running sneaker for her flat feet. She stumbled across the Hoka One Bondi and ultimately fell in love with these cushioned running shoes. She ended up running not one–but two marathons–in them. Hoka is not as well known as some other sneaker brands but if you’ve suffered wearing other sneakers, perhaps give them a try. The soles are very thick, which takes time to ‘break in’—more on Hoka’s thick soles in the next paragraph.

Maximalist vs. Minimalist sneaker

The Hoka Sneaker and Gravity Defyer sneakers are examples of maximalist sneakers. Opposite of a minimalist sneaker (minimal cushioning), a maximalist sneaker contains extra thick cushioning for foot impact. The maximalist shoe alleviates pressure from feet and helps with flat foot pain, plantar fasciitis, neuromas, heel pad atrophy, and metatarsal pain. Some research suggests the maximalist sneakers may cause added pressure to the knees; therefore, it might be a good idea to avoid this type of sneaker with knee pain.

Adidas For Flat Feet

Women’s Adidas Ultraboost 20 (CLICK TO SHOP)
Men’s Adidas Ultraboost 20 (CLICK TO SHOP)

The Ultraboost 20 is not only a cute and very chic sneaker; it’s excellent for midfoot and heel striking runners with moderate flat feet. The sneaker upper is made from a Primeknit synthetic material and is very breathable. From personal experience, this sneaker works great on elliptical equipment and for other cardio classes.

This sneaker helps with over-pronation as well. It’s a medium-weight sneaker, not a maximalist like the G-Defy or the Hoka. I find that the Ultraboost 20 is suitable for long-distance runners who have flexible flat feet. Pass on this sneaker if you have stiff or rigid/stiff flat feet or painful foot arthritis. If your feet or knee joints cannot tolerate a maximalist-type of sneaker, give this one a try!

Brooks For Flat Feet

Women’s Brooks Transcend 7 (CLICK TO SHOP)
Men’s Brooks Transcend 7 (CLICK TO SHOP)

Brooks running sneakers are a favorite amongst runners in NYC. So many of my patients love them and are therefore worth mentioning in this post. This particular Brooks sneaker is ideal for flat-footed runners needing that extra support during exercise. The Transcend is designed for flat or medium arches specifically. In addition, runners appreciate Brooks for their durability.

New Balance

Women’s New Balance Fresh Foam 860v11 (CLICK TO SHOP)
Men’s New Balance Fresh Foam 860v11 (CLICK TO SHOP)

New Balance Fresh Foam sneakers are famous for their stability when running and walking. This brand is also great for its inclusive sizing: the sneakers are narrow, regular, wide, and extra-wide. This sneaker helps maintain over-pronation of the feet during exercise. The shoes offer a comfortable lining in the counter area. Reviewers recommend this sneaker for someone with flat feet with wider toes and narrow heels.

In summary, I hope this list helps you find your ideal sneakers. Do you recommend a specific sneaker for flat feet? Please share below in the comments!
