As a podiatrist (and a huge Disney fan!), it is my duty to share with you the best shoes for exploring Disney World. If it’s your first time to Disney, prepare yourself for a fun vacation, with A LOT of walking! Adversely, if you’ve visited Disney World in the past, you know first hand how much walking is required. With many family fun attractions to explore, it’s essential to keep your feet feeling healthy and pain-free.
This blog post is all about the best shoes for walking around Walt Disney World.
I’ve divided this post into seasons: summer, winter, and all-season shoes. Shoe options depend on the time of year you plan to visit Disney World. For example, Disney World during the summer is humid and rainy, with very hot temperatures. During the winter months, the parks can dip below 40 degrees Fahrenheit (4 degrees Celsius)

why invest in supportive shoes for disney world?
Shoes are an investment in your feet. A quality pair is especially important for theme park vacations and road trips. Afterall, you are using your vacation time and spending money to experience the attractions. The last thing you want is sore feet holding you back.
You can see from the photo above that we walked an average of over 26,000 steps per day. To put that number in perspective, the average New York City subway rider walks around 10,000 steps per day. Our daily steps were almost triple that amount! All in all, your family’s shoe choices can make all the difference.
As a foot doctor, I’ve been asked these questions about travel shoes: Are flip flops realistic? How about sandals? Maybe running shoes are a better option? Keep reading for my expert answers to these questions.

what should I look for in a comfortable shoe?
Critical elements in a quality shoe design (regardless of the style) are:
- shock absorption – how does it feel when you press on the shoe? Too hard or too soft?
- arch support – the arch area should be built up, not flat.
- memory foam – is there cushion in the toe or heel area of the shoes?
- proper fit – a shoe that feels loose or tight will cause blisters.
- breathe-ability – when your feet sweat, will this material allow my feet to breathe?
- durability – will this shoe hold up over time or fall apart?
- wash-ability – how will this material clean?
- waterproof – will my feet get wet in these?
- traction – can I walk in these without slipping?
- comfort – will these pinch my toes?
- versatility – can I wear these with my outfits?
- eco-friendly
- sustainability
best summer shoes for disney world
The weather varies in Disney World but for most of the year, it is hot. So, a breathable shoe or open sandal is ideal. During summer months, the parks can also get very wet from daily rain showers. Wearing non-slip, water resistant shoes is something to keep in mind.
1. birkenstock’s sandals

Birkenstock’s are THE classic sandal designed to become more comfortable over wear time. They are a popular favorite on Tiktok. (However, I don’t recommend them for everyone. If you are flat footed, there are better options for you – read this.) Practical, comfortable, and supportive Birkenstock’s make sense for the miles of theme park walking Disney World requires. And, in the heat of Florida summertime visits, Birkenstock sandals help keep feet cool and dry. They also have adjustable straps for foot swelling in hot weather.
Additionally, shock absorption is one of the essential elements in a good shoe and sandal. Birkenstock’s arch support and shock absorbing cork footbed offers comfort while visiting a theme park. The comfortable sandals come in many different style’s colors, and sizes.
I recommend to BREAK BIRKENSTOCK’S IN, *before* your trip. Wear them to pick up the kids at school, coffee trips, target runs etc.
Birkenstock’s also have options for kids in many fun colorful shoes and sandals. They include the same comfort and support of the cork footbed found in the adult footwear. Some have an addtional backstrap for even more comfort and stability. *Keep in mind* just as the adult styles, these take a couple of weeks for feet to adjust.
SHOP BIRKENSTOCKS KIDS SANDALS HERE
Why are Birkenstock sandals unique? It’s because the footbed conforms to your foot. The more you wear them, the better the fit. They are well-loved because they are often viewed as irreplaceable. Above all, if the sole wears out, it can be replaced.
2. aerothotics arch support flip-flops
Aerothotic sandals saved my feet during my pregnancy, so I’m adding them to this list. They are built with contoured, podiatrist-inspired footbeds. This will support the natural arches of the feet and help reduce strain on the heels, ankles, and lower back.

Instead of flat, cheap-feeling flip-flops, Aerothotic has cushioned soles. When I use them, they feel very supportive, especially for flip-flops. The heel is designed to cup and support your feet with every step. The materials are lightweight and somewhat flexible, so they don’t feel heavy. They are affordable and, in my opinion, are a smart investment for your Disney trip. Up next are two more sandal options for you.
3. okabashi eco sandals
SHOP OKABASHI FLIP FLOPS ON AMAZON
One of my favorite, sustainable flip-flops (Made in the USA) is Okabashi. The flip-flops are designed with comfort in mind, including an arch support and a heel cup for stability. They provide a supportive walking environment (for flip-flops). Okabashi shoes are excellent for Disney water parks, too. Plus, Okabashi shoes are 100% recycleable when worn out. The company provides instructions on its website for mailing your old, worn-out pairs. As a courtesy, they will send you a 20% off coupon for your next pair.
Although many people wear flip-flops in Disney parks, they offer very little stability and no shock-absorbing material. I suggest packing a second pair of shoes, like sneakers, if the flip-flops don’t work out.
4. teva hurricaine drifters sandals
SHOP TEVA HURRICANE DRIFTERS HERE
TEVA’s are designed for the beach but are comfortable enough to wear around Disney World. I don’t have any personal experience with TEVAs, but they are a favorite shoe amongst the TikTok community. These sandals will keep your feet comfortable and cool in the hot Florida sun. These are fully injected-molded EVA foam sandals. This makes them lightweight, supportive, comfortable, and highly durable for long days.
TEVA is also great for kids, especially for water activities. With the added straps, they will stay put. In my opinion, they are a much healthier option over other shoes (like crocs).
best winter & fall shoes for disney world
Generally, the winter months in Disney are dry and unpredictable. The temperature can get chilly at night! Plan for the unexpected. During my most recent trip to Disney, temperatures dipped into the low forties. Luckily, we flew in from the Northeast and had readily available warm clothes to wear. Keep reading for few favorite comfy shoes and sneakers. They will keep your feet comfy (and temperature controlled) during the winter months in Disney world.

5. allbirds tree runners
SHOP ALLBIRDS TREE RUNNERS HERE
A perfect Disney World shoe is the Allbirds Tree Runners. The Tree Runners are comfortable, lightweight, and keep your feet cool. This everyday sneaker is made of wool and other natural and recycled materials. Think: a breathable, comfortable, and versatile walking shoe. Plus, Allbirds are so cozy! Many people prefer wearing them without socks, including myself. If it’s too cool out for sandals AND you hate socks, check out Allbirds Tree Runners.
6. hokas

CLICK HERE TO SHOP HOKAS SNEAKERS
If you haven’t heard, Hoka sneakers are designed to cushion your feet during long walks. So it’s no surprise they made it to this list! I generally recommend Hoka’s for foot arthritis, neuromas, and severe flat feet. Plus they are approved by the American Podiatric Medical Association. The oversize midsoles provide shock absorption, helping reduce tiredness in the heels and knees.
Hoka’s are a great choice if you’re not accustomed to long walks or standing all day. Allow me to explain why they are unique. Hokas have something called a rocker-bottom sole. When worn, they propel you forward, making walking feel easier on your muscles. The foam soles are relatively lightweight as well, so you don’t feel a heaviness when walking in them. I have tried the Hoka bondi SR’s, and they are very walkable shoes! Evidently, standing in lines and exploring the world showcase will be a breeze in these.
7. new balance 327
CLICK HERE TO SHOP NEW BALANCE 327
What’s not to like about New Balance 327’s? They are comfy, versatile, easy to walk in, and look SO cute with any outfit, especially with leggings or denim. I always pack mine for my walking trips, including Disney World, the UK, and stateside exploring. However, I found them slightly slippery in the rain. Therefore, would not pack these during the rainy summer months in Disney. They are breathable and versatile, perfect for the Disney winter months. Up next is an all season shoe that’s designed for walking.

8. vionic walk max sneaker
CLICK HERE TO SHOP VIONIC WALK MAX SNEAKER
For extended walking, like the 26,000 steps you’ll take in Disney, the Vionic Walk Max Sneaker is a lifesaver. It’s designed exclusively for long-distance walking. It features a deep heel cup to support your Achilles tendons during walking. It has excellent shock absorption and a podiatrist-designed orthotic footbed to reduce ball-of-foot pressure. BTW I own two pairs and love them for long walks! What’s amazing about them is they keep your entire body aligned as you chase your little ones around the parks. In addition, the breathable mesh will keep your feet cool in the Florida sun. The Walk Max also has excellent traction for rainy days at the park. Up next is a more affordable walking option.
9. adidas cloudfoam pure sneakers
CLICK HERE TO SHOP ADIDAS CLOUDFOAM SNEAKERS
Adidas Cloudfoam Pure sneakers are another terrific choice for Disney World. They blend lightweight comfort with wearability by absorbing impact while you walk. The special sockliner feels smooth on your skin and keeps your feet blister-free. This is especially beneficial if you suffer from bunions or hammertoes. While you’re waiting in line between rides, the sneaker will support your arches. The upper portion of the sneaker is breathable, great for warm Florida weather. Be prepared to walk your 26,000 steps pain-free every day

The lite racer for kids is a comparable choice to the Adult cloudfoam sneaker. They are slip-on, wearable, supportive and are available in a variety of fun colors! These look like sleeping beauty’s dress.

10. power step orthotics

Wearing my “glass slipper” Converse sneakers to the Magic Kingdom didn’t seem like the smartest option. But I really wanted to wear them, despite knowing that most Converse sneakers lack arch support. The thought of walking around with heel pain on my last day of Disney World made me brainstorm. And here’s the simple solution: orthotics. Adding in a pair of Power Step 3/4 orthotics will still allow me to wear my Converse glass slippers. And it worked! I had very little to no discomfort using them in my glass slipper Converse sneakers.
Up next are six tips for keeping your feet pain-free during your trip. Below is a photo of my power step 3/4 orthotics.

6 tips for walking disney world pain-free.
Every night at dinner, my friends and I compared health apps for our daily steps. (Also, we wanted to justify having dessert or an extra margarita from all the calories burned that day.) Everyday we hit 20,000+ steps. To put that in perspective, 20,000 steps are equal to 8.5 miles, which is the equivalent of walking 1/2 of a half-marathon. Let’s multiply that by multiple days around the parks. The amount of walking can easily amount to 34 – 40 miles in 4 or 5 days!
Here are 6 tips for walking around Disney world:
- Firstly, blister Band-aids are lifesavers. Bring them with your in your backpack or purse. A colloid blister bandaid can withstand future friction. They also helps prevent bacterial contamination. I linked one here that I always pack.
- Secondly, body Glide can help with the prevention of chafing and blisters. Runners use it for races. It is linked here.
- Stay hydrated. Florida is hot!
- Even with good shoes, your feet still need rest. Take rest breaks in the park and at your hotel. It’s not a race it’s a vacation.
- Another key point: apply sunscreen to your feet. Especially when wearing sandals or flip-flips.
- Lastly, prop your feet up at night when you return to your hotel room. This will help with swelling and any soreness you experience.
In summary, this blog post was all about the best shoes to wear on a Disney World vacation. Have you been Disney world and what shoes did you wear?
